چکیده

In an earlier workshop paper [HMWH95], we set out a number of issues we regarded as important in VR system design. Some of these were investigated in the AVIARY system [WHH+93, SW94], and work on these is continuing. In 1993 we began a collaborative project with CADCentre Ltd in Cambridge, to explore the potential of VR systems for the design of very large-scale process plants – structures such as oil refineries, North Sea oil rigs, chemical plants, and power generation plant. Preliminary results from this work have been reported elsewhere [HM94]. An early finding was that these models were so complicated that neither AVIARY, nor typical off-the-shelf or public-domain VR systems, would be capable of handling them with anything approaching an acceptable frame rate. We therefore began to consider a design for a new system to address such problems, and to provide us with a framework for research into a variety of VR issues.

This paper describes research conducted in collaboration with Greater Manchester Police (United Kingdom), to evaluate the utility of Virtual Environments for scene of crime analysis, forensic investigation, and law enforcement briefing and training. We present an illustrated case study of the construction of a high-fidelity virtual environment, intended to match a particular real-life crime sce...

MAVERIK: A Virtua l Reality System for Research and Tea ching

This paper describes some experiences with the use of the MAVERIK system for supporting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research. MAVERIK is a high-level system for creating and managing interactive virtual environments. It is available free under the GNU General Public Licence. MAVERIK is modular and extensible, and its use of Mesa, the free OpenGL-like graphics system, means that ...

Editorial: User centred design and implementation of virtual environments

Traditionally, the development of virtual environments has been limited to particular technologies and the associated constraints on environment definition and interaction. However, with advances in both graphics hardware/software and the availability of new input/output devices, many of the restrictions on virtual environment development have been removed [10]. Rendering rates are now reaching...

Using a Virtual Reality Environment to Simulate the Pushing of Cylindrical Nanoparticles

With the rise in the use of AFM (Atomic Force Microscope), we have witnessed a growing use of atomic microscope based nanorobots in the precise displacement of various particles. There are certain limitations to the application of nanorobots in the moving of nanoparticles. One of the most important of these limitations is the lack of an appropriate image feedback concurrent with the displaci...

A Microkernel for Large-Scale Virtual Environments

This paper describes a publicly available virtual reality (VR) system, GNU/MAVERIK, which forms one component of a complete VR operating system. We give an overview of the architecture of MAVERIK, and show how it is designed to use application data in an intelligent way, via a simple, yet powerful, callback mechanism that supports an object-oriented framework of classes, objects, and methods. E...
